STYLE ICONS: LADY GAGA EDITION

STYLE ICONS: LADY GAGA EDITION

Gaga for Lady Gaga? Yeah, me too. And not just as an artist but as a fashion icon as well. Music isn’t her only game, and in fact, since showing the world her ‘poker face’ back in 2008 her outfits have been talked about just as much as her songs have.

HOW TO GET THE LADY GAGA

I mean, really, Lady Gaga’s style has become embedded into her identity. She’s about the total image, and she’s built one hell of an iconic career on it. Behind the glitter and glam, she writes her own lyrics, plays the guitar and piano, and dances, of course, raising awe and awareness and inspiring millions all along the way.

BOLD AND EVOLVING STYLE

Infamously bold and ever-evolving are both great adjectives to describe Lady Gaga’s sense of style. In her early days, Lady Gaga helped herself stand apart (okay, really stand apart) from the crowd through crazy wigs, sky-high platform heels, and wild sunglasses. Back then she was always pushing the boundaries a bit (okay, sometimes a lot); corseted black lace, disco-mirror bras, glittery eye decals, and beetle wings all included. Of course, who could forget the legendary meat dress she wore to the 2010 MTV VMAs?

She’s always married her outfits with art, accessorizing with imagination, wearing recycled pieces (and by this, I don’t mean wearing something twice, but wearing pieces literally recycled from other items), and embellishing with wacky hair and makeup to top it all off. Lady Gaga has certainly never been afraid to go on the offensive to make a statement either, whether it be for fashion, politics, or anything in between. Remember her “Bad Romance” video? She literally barbecued a deceptive boyfriend with a flame-throwing bra. Or when she wore a jacket made solely of Kermit the Frog dolls to take a stance against wearing real fur? Yeah, she really went there.

LOVING LACE

Lady Gaga, The pop star, actress, and philanthropist has undergone more personal fashion eras than one could ever hope to achieve in a lifetime. To say she has experimented in many different realms would be an understatement. One day she’s dusted in glitter and sequins for performance, the next she’s channeling retro country vibes for her stripped-back album, Joanne, and then she’s casually out on the town clothed in haute couture for dinner. Gotta love her. From lace face coverings to simple black gowns, she really can pull anything off. Attention-baiting or not, it’s certainly made a lasting impact on the pop culture landscape.

RED CARPET WINNERS

Yes, there’s certainly only one Lady Gaga. And there will never be another. While she’s taken her over-the-top style down a notch over the last few years, every now and then we still see it creep through. But overall the pop icon has been steadily stripping down her real-life fashion, showing us a more elegant and graceful side that I personally love. And whether you have loved her looks or loathed them, there’s no question that she’s secured her place in fashion history. Here are some of my favorites of the Mother Monster’s many, many memorable looks:

Back in 2015, channeling Hollywood glamour, Gaga rocked a ravishing red Brandon Maxwell one-shoulder dress for the premiere screening of ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’. It showed off some of her most feminine features, with a low-cut neckline and thigh-high slit. She painted on a red lip and let loose retro curls hang down to complete the look.

In 2016, at a star-studded Saint Laurent show she stood out in a glittery gold tuxedo jacket adorned with a black lapel. She kept it simple with a sheer, white button-up underneath, simple black loafers, and crazy, cute short curls.

Later that year the singer rocked another stunning piece by Saint Laurent. She wore this sequin dress to attend the Daily Front Row Fashion held in LA. It was flashy and multi-colored with feathered cuffs and came from the designer’s fabulous pre-fall collection. Note the signature platform heels that I have no idea how she gets around in.

During the 2016 AMAs, Gaga celebrated her fifth album, Joanne, in exquisite style.  She wore an all-white, wide-leg, very low-cut power suit accompanied by a beautiful white hat to match. And. She. Looked. Fierce.

LADY GAGA STREET-STYLE

Who else could pull off a lace mini-dress with ruffle sleeves and a matching choker? While out in London she paired this number with tall black booties and a bubblegum pink hat. This look was feminine and flirty with a bit of edge as she carried her guitar case and threw fans a peace sign.

In New York City, Gaga showed a more classy and tame version of her ‘wild side’. She rocked a head-to-toe leopard print by Gabriela Hearst and paired it with a black and red Gucci handbag.

Her most recent street style has been sleek, sleek, sleek. She recently hit a London nightclub in a long belted leather jacket, fishnets, pointed booties, and round sunnies. A very ‘Matrix’ look. Hey, black on black will always be in vogue in my book.

GAGA GLAMOUR

Gaga looked stunning in this classic black dress designed by Brandon Maxwell while walking the red carpet at 2016 The Fashion Awards at Royal Albert Hall in London, England. She kept her hair back in a soft, low bun, that helped show off the beautiful backless feature of the gown.

Just this year, at the Venice Film Festival premiere of her latest movie, ‘A Star is Born’, Gaga took the world’s breath away when she showed up in a baby pink Valentino Haute Couture dress made of airy feathers. Did she look like a princess here or what?

Needless to say, I’m excited to see what she has in store for the future – in all aspects. When it comes to fashion, I don’t think there’s any risk she won’t take, but can we really blame her? Baby, she was born this way.
